Artist Statement

My first day in the seventh grade Art class, at Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive High School, in Kingston, Jamaica, the Art teacher Mr. Williamson challenged me. He asked, "George Walker, what is Art?” I answered very cautiously... “Art is a painting, drawing, or a sculpture.” He did not acknowledge my response. He simply pontificate his definition of Fine Art, with supreme authority. He said, "Art is representing a thing with skill and ability, whether the thing is beautiful or ugly."

I have never forgotten this definition of Art, and I had often times Pondered its meaning ever since. This simple yet profound definition of Art had forever altered my perception. It had catapulted my own consciousness into a journey to the realm freedom and creative expressions.

At 17, I moved to United States. I enrolled in George W. Wingate High School, in Brooklyn, New York. I attended New York’s, Fashion Institute of Technology, in the Fine Arts Department. I later transferred my major for a more creative challenge in Fashion Design and Fashion Illustration and graduated with Associate Degree. I worked in the Fashion Industry and every position that I held, contributed in fine-tuning my abilities to become the Fine Artist that I am today.

I moved from New York, to San Diego in 1990. I took a position at Brawn of California, in a low profile, non-creative position. The lack of creativity resulted in boredom and stagnation. This was an affront to the very sensitive nature of my being. I decided to retreat after work every day to the confines of my studio. In total isolation, I would surrender to the Will and the needs of my own creative spirit. I awakened to realize that George Alphonso Walker, the Fine Artist was born.

Emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, I was fully committed and married to the Art of creating Art. This union surreptitiously united all aspects of my consciousness. I unleashed my bridal passion upon the face of every canvas. My oil paints, brushes, and my music were mere extensions of desire that was unfolding deep with in own soul.

My expectation of myself is that my Art will be able to enlighten Humanity in some way. My primary objective is to stimulate, excite, and ignite the human senses. If I have accomplished even a fraction of this mission, then the journey of my life, as a Fine Artist would have been well lived.

I have learned to appreciate the life I am living, and I am embracing the life that I choose to love.

Yet, I know that: This is only the beginning.
